Romney to suspend campaign for president
CNN and TIME reported today shortly after 12 p.m. EST that former Massachussetts Governor Mitt Romney will suspend his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. The one-time front-runner scored a largely disappointing showing on Tuesday, with opponents John McCain and Mike Huckabee landing what campaign analysts have termed overwhelming and surprise victories in the 22-state contest. Romney is expected to announce his decision this afternoon in an already scheduled appearance before the powerful Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC). By suspending - and not formally ending - his campaign, Romney will remain a candidate on forthcoming ballots and will retain his present pledged delegates, but is not permitted to actively pursue the nomination.
