Abortion should not warrant diversity of viewpoints

I enjoy reading the AQ Saint as an alumnus and am glad to be able to read about recent events on campus with every forthcoming issue. However, I am disappointed to read the Saint’s editorial titled “Discouragement of opposing viewpoint during Pro-Life Week unreflective of Dominican values.” While I can sympathize with the laudable view to present all sides of an issue (i.e. “inclusiveness,” “learning within a global perspective,” and “having an open mind and heart,” as noted from quotes by Catholic sources), the issue of abortion is grave enough not to warrant a diversity of viewpoints, considering the death of the child involved and the psychological (and possible medical) harm it wreaks upon the woman involved. Simply put, it is an evil to be opposed, no matter how it may be presented as a good or as progress. It is also an extraordinary failure in addressing what is good for women.

Finally, while the values articulated by Aquinas College or the Dominican Order on this topic may be of further dispute, it should be noted that the Catholic Church is historically unwavering in its condemnation of intentionally induced abortion, hence no invitation for “dialogue” has been granted on this topic.

Thank you for your time. I do still very much enjoy reading the Saint!
